It is therefore appropriate to acclaim Newton as the greatest figure in mathematical physics and the Principia is his greatest achievement.”

The male Southern Elephant Seals like to fight. The sub-adult male (teenage) seals are play flighting on the beach near the gates into the Macquarie Island research base.

When they get older, they will be fighting to be beach master.

Sitting along the beach and wondering what the Southern Elephant Seals are going to do. Will it sit on your legs (at a few months old they weigh over 150kg!), will it try and push you over (they like to play games), or will it try to eat your camera?

These wild animals are in this curious state for just a few weeks of their life before they head out to sea for the first time.

With their big eyes and smiling faces, I don’t think I’ve seen a cuter animal than an Southern Elephant Seal when they are pups (when they grow up is a story for another time). Their population is slowly recovering after being aggressively hunted last century.

It is sad to see that there are still countries in the world that allow the killing of seal pups and the sale of products made from them.
